SACS Review

The Department’s graduate programs are reviewed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is the recognized and independent regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees. During the last review conducted by the SACS Commission on Colleges, the independent evaluators reported that:

” […] the unanimous impression that came from all students that we talked to is about the most important issues that do not come easily:

  • Extremely positive feedback about availability of their professors: open door policy, professors’ willingness to help and advise
  • Awareness of advantages of interdisciplinary department and exposure to different areas of studies and professors with various expertise
  • Working together with fellow graduate students from different academic backgrounds that create an experience enhancing environment
  • Opportunity to meet and be around fellow students from different parts of the world also contributes to cultural diversity and personal growth

Students also expressed satisfaction with the existing student association and the work done by it. In addition, graduate students had only the best comments about UM’s library, especially the Engineering section. Students also emphasized the tremendous help and support that they get from a specialist librarian dedicated to Engineering. It was great to observe a strong sense of community and belonging among graduate students, as well as their enthusiasm and passion for the Department, the professors, and the research work that they are doing. We certainly recommend that, as the department grows, all involved continue to cherish and nurture this atmosphere of collaboration and development. […] ”
