In all fields of specialization, up to one-half of the required course work for the selected degree may be taken outside of the Department.

The Department’s graduate programs are reviewed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is the recognized and independent regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees. During the last review conducted by the SACS Commission on Colleges, the independent evaluators reported that:

Students also expressed satisfaction with the existing student association and the work done by it. In addition, graduate students had only the best comments about UM’s library, especially the Engineering section. It was great to observe a strong sense of community and belonging among graduate students, as well as their enthusiasm and passion for the Department, the professors, and the research work that they are doing.
